Fans of Sushant Singh Rajput often wonder about the projects he could have done, and director Anurag Kashyap recently opened up about one such film, ‘Nishaanchi’, that never came to life with the late actor.
In an interview with Galatta Plus, Anurag shared how the project, which he once wanted to make with Sushant, fell through due to timing, big film deals, and the unpredictable turns of the film industry.

Anurag Kashyap revealed that ‘Nishaanchi’ was originally announced with Sushant Singh Rajput back in 2016. “This was the film I wanted to make with him,” he said.
But soon after, Sushant signed two big films with Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, ‘Dil Bechara’ and ‘Drive’. Once those deals were in place, Anurag’s film was pushed aside, and communication between them faded. “He stopped responding, so I moved on,” Anurag admitted.
The director also reflected on another earlier experience with Sushant, when the actor backed out of ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’, a film produced by Anurag’s house. Sushant had chosen to do Yash Raj Films’ ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’ instead, seeking validation from the big banner.
“He wanted YRF’s validation, which is something every actor goes through. I don’t hold grudges,” Anurag explained.
Anurag further recounted trying to make ‘Nishaanchi’ even before Sushant’s untimely death. “Many actors were aware of the script, and some were interested, but it never felt right. Years later, before ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’ released, Mukesh Chhabra approached him for my script about a character from Uttar Pradesh. Dhoni released and became a success, but I never heard back from Sushant. I wasn’t upset; I moved on and made ‘Mukkabaaz’ instead,” he said.
